Do you know how your home is wired? Many homes that are around today were built decades ago, before electrical codes were developed to the point they are now. In the past, some unsafe methods for wiring homes were used, and while they might function just fine under most circumstances, this doesn’t mean that they can’t develop issues later on that can be quite catastrophic.
Take aluminum wiring, for example. You can recognize it by the abbreviation CO/ALR being stamped on the wires. Aluminum wiring degrades faster than copper wiring, and it can be a fire hazard. Replacing it would require the help of an electrician.
Knob and tube wiring is even older, and some modern homes still have it but it might have been retrofitted improperly. If work is being done on this type of wiring, you want to make sure that the electrician has experience with it, since it could easily become lethal.
